Watching golf on the box…

Was watching the FedEx Cup /Tour Championship at East Lake and found myself doomscrolling and flicking channels as it was that uninspiring. That is not to say that the golf and Scottie were not excellent, but there was very little to inspire.

Scottie is now getting to that level, that the other players sort of look like they do not think they will win, if Scottie is anywhere near his game. Golf, like all sports, needs a rivalry (or rivalries). It needs a “goodie” and a “baddie” so to speak. Currently, I do not think golf has that.

Watching the golf | Same old, same old?

There is no Senna & Prost, Messi & Ronaldo, Federer/Nadal/Djokovic, Arnold & Jack…you get the picture.

But actually, I think it needs more than that. There’s no jeopardy…no angst… what-ifs…

It actually means, lesser golf in terms of scoring and prestige, is actually a more engaging product to view. The ones desperate to keep their playing rights, the ones on the “second” tours trying to make the jump, the ones who do not have the mortgage money for next week, let alone next year. These are all more vital for them and more vital to watch.

So are the major tours serving up the same old, same old? And is this good for the game, the future development, the vieiwng public and their ratings?
